Content Plan The Next Elite 8

A running list of what we did not capture in 2026 and will capture next time. Cliff adds to it as things come to him; nothing here is closed until it is shot. The detailed boards live in the Shoot Bible, the weekend clock lives in the Run of Show — this is the standing list of gaps.

Missed in 2026This mark sits on the 6 things Cliff said outright we did not capture this year. Everything else is either carried over from the 2026 Shoot Bible or added to make those 6 actually happen.

The 2026 read

What We Got vs. What We Missed

12 items across 4 blocks
6 named misses · 12 still open

Cliff's assessment: 2026 content was pretty good, but it was wrestling-heavy and shooter-dependent. The six items in the right column are the ones he named outright as missed — they carry a MISSED IN 2026 mark everywhere they appear below. Click one to jump to its item.

We got plenty of

  • Live mat action — stills and video, both days
  • Round results, box scores, bracket graphics
  • Mat splash cards, roster banners, schedule banners
  • Stream coverage across all five mats

Priority block A

Gear On Bodies

Mostly Compound lane · the single biggest hole in 2026
5 items · 4 missed in 2026

We photograph wrestling. We do not photograph the product, and the product is the business. Every item here is apparel-first.

Missed in 2026— one of the six Cliff named outright

A-01

The warm-up wall

P1CompoundNEW
Cliff saidWe get plenty of actual wrestling shots, but not shots of the athletes in their warm-ups.

Warm-ups, quarter-zips and travel kit are what teams actually buy. Right now we have no library of them being worn in a real environment.

What we come away with

  • Every team's warm-up worn on a body, front and back, clean background — treat it like a shot list, tick teams off
  • Warm-up line before each dual — the whole team in matching kit, wide
  • Hood up, hands in pockets, headphones — the way kids actually wear it
  • Detail passes: sleeve hits, back hits, zipper pulls, embroidery, the seat of the pants
Timing
Friday weigh-ins and the 40 minutes before each Saturday round
Owner
One shooter assigned to apparel only — not doubling on mat
Watch out
This dies first when the crew gets pulled to the mats. It needs a dedicated person or it will not happen again.

A-02

The stands sweep

P1Both lanesNEW
Cliff saidWe don't get any shots of the fans, parents and coaches and their branded Elite 8 gear and Compound gear.

Fan and parent gear is proof the brand left the mat. It is also the best-performing social content we never make.

What we come away with

  • Roving pass through the stands twice a day hunting Elite 8 and Compound logos on non-athletes
  • Parent in a team hoodie watching their kid — the reaction shot, not the posed one
  • Coaches on the bench in staff apparel, full length
  • Sibling / little-kid-in-a-big-tee shots — they always land
  • Ask permission on the spot and keep a running names list for tagging
Timing
Every round, both days
Owner
Phone-tier shooter — does not need the big camera
Watch out
Minors in frame. Get the parent right there; do not post a kid's face without the ask.
Missed in 2026— one of the six Cliff named outright

A-03

Gear handout — the drop

P1CompoundNEW
Cliff saidGetting content of the uniforms being handed out.

The handout is the emotional peak of the product cycle and we have never filmed it. It is the single most reusable Compound asset at this event.

What we come away with

  • Boxes stacked and unopened — the before shot
  • Coach calling names, kids coming up one at a time
  • First look on a kid's face as the singlet comes out of the bag
  • Kids comparing, holding it up, immediately putting it on
  • Wide of a team fully kitted right after
Timing
Whenever each team's handout actually happens — confirm with coaches ahead of time, most do it at the hotel or Friday
Owner
One shooter, mobile, may need to leave the venue
Watch out
Handouts happen off-site and unannounced. This has to be pre-arranged by phone weeks out, not chased on the day.
Missed in 2026— one of the six Cliff named outright

A-04

Team gear unboxing — one kid per team

P1CompoundNEW
Cliff saidGet one kid on each team if we could get all 12 teams, or a handful of teams that we really like their gear, to do like an unboxing of their gear, go through it and give their opinions.

Honest athlete reaction to the product is the most credible sales content we can make, and it doubles as a recruiting-page asset for the team.

What we come away with

  • Ambition: all 12 teams. Floor: the 5–6 teams whose gear we are proudest of
  • Same setup every time — one backdrop, one light, same framing, so the set cuts together as a series
  • Structure: what's in the bag → pick up each piece → what do you think → what's your favorite → what would you change
  • Push for the real answer on 'what would you change' — the critique is what makes it believable
  • Cut two versions per kid: a 45-second social edit and the full take for the archive
Timing
Friday afternoon, or Saturday between rounds. Book slots in advance.
Owner
Fixed two-person station — one runs camera, one runs the kid
Watch out
Needs parent/coach sign-off per athlete and a booked time. Walking up cold on Saturday will get us two of twelve.

A-05

Product talk with the coaches

P2CompoundCARRIED
Cliff saidCarried forward from the 2026 Shoot Bible (Board L) — it was planned and did not get shot.

All twelve coaches are Compound customers. Five minutes each is a testimonial library that pays for the whole trip.

What we come away with

  • Quality and durability — how has it held up
  • Design process — what was working with us actually like
  • Would you send a friend to us, and why
  • What should we build that we don't build yet
Timing
Friday, before the weekend gets loud
Owner
Same station as A-04 — stack them back to back
Watch out
Same trap as the recruiting interviews: leave it to Sunday and everyone has gone home.

Priority block B

The Interviews We Did Not Get

Elite 8 lane · time-sensitive, front-load them
3 items · 1 missed in 2026

One rule governs this whole block: shoot it early. Cliff's exact constraint — get them early in the event, before things get hectic and everybody leaves.

Missed in 2026— one of the six Cliff named outright

B-01

Coaches on recruiting — why this event matters

P1Elite 8NEW
Cliff saidWe didn't get any interviews with the coaches about how important the event is for their athletes to come to, to get recruited.

This is the case for the event's existence, told by someone other than us. It sells next year's teams, next year's college coaches and next year's parents.

What we come away with

  • The core ask: what does bringing your team here actually do for their recruiting
  • A named kid who got seen here and where he ended up — push past the general answer until you get a name
  • What a college coach in the building means to a kid who has no offers yet
  • Would you bring the team back, and what would you tell a coach who's never come
  • Shoot every one of them the same way so they cut into one piece
Timing
Friday weigh-ins through Saturday morning. Hard cutoff: do not plan any of these for Sunday.
Owner
Interviewer who knows the sport — these fall apart with a generic host
Watch out
Coaches are busiest exactly when we want them. Book the slot in advance by text, do not ambush.

B-02

The named targets

P1Elite 8NEEDS INFO
Cliff saidWe got some really good stories like Jerry and Beets with the Mambas and guys like that, so I want to do a better job with that and specifically target those guys.

We already know who tells a good story. Do not rediscover them on the day — build the list now and lock the times.

What we come away with

  • Beets · Black Mambas — confirmed strong storyteller, book him first
  • 'Jerry' — name needs confirming, see Open Questions. Could be a second Mambas coach or a dictation slip on Jarion.
  • Build the list to 6–8 names by June and text each one personally
  • Carry over from the 2026 bible: Tim Ziola (Dynasty), Porter (Team Thunder)
Timing
List locked by June. Slots confirmed the week of.
Owner
Cliff makes the asks — they say yes to him, not to a crew member
Watch out
Names unconfirmed. This item cannot be assigned until the list is real.

B-03

College coaches, asked real questions

P2Elite 8CARRIED
Cliff saidCarried from the 2026 Shoot Bible — the counterpart to B-01, from the recruiting side of the table.

Pairs with the high school coach answers to make one piece rather than two halves.

What we come away with

  • Recruiting budget, NIL reality, who would you take out of this building today
  • Real questions, not coach-speak prompts
  • Cut against the B-01 answers so the two sides talk to each other
Timing
Saturday, while they are still in the building
Owner
Same interviewer as B-01
Watch out
They are working. Two minutes standing up beats a scheduled sit-down that never happens.

Priority block C

The Build — A Real Documentary

Compound-weighted · the piece Cliff most wants and least got
2 items · 1 missed in 2026

Cliff on 2026: this just didn't get done this year. It is not a recap edit. It is somebody following the work.

Missed in 2026— one of the six Cliff named outright

C-01

Follow the operator

P1CompoundNEW
Cliff saidJust getting a better behind the scenes progression, not just a mashup, but actually have somebody kind of following me and what goes into the planning of the event. People love storytelling and that just didn't get done this year.

The event looks effortless from the stands. The work is the story, and nobody outside the building has ever seen it.

What we come away with

  • Start earlier than feels necessary — the week of, minimum; a couple of days out is the floor
  • Phone calls, the problems, the thing that goes wrong and gets fixed
  • Load-in and setup: empty hall → mats down → signage up → doors open. Same frame, same tripod mark, so the time-lapse actually works
  • Sit-down with Cliff twice — once before doors, once after the final — same chair, same framing
  • The quiet moments: the empty venue at 6 AM, the last box loaded Sunday night
  • Doors-open reveal is the money shot — lock the camera position on Friday so it's ready
Timing
Begins days before the event, ends Sunday night after tear-down
Owner
One person whose only job is this. They do not get pulled to shoot mat action.
Watch out
The main risk is starting on Friday. If the shooter arrives with everyone else, there is no build to film.

C-02

Two cuts, two lanes

P2Both lanesNEW
Cliff saidThat could be a lot more on the Compound Sportswear front and less on the Elite 8 Duals front. It could be two-pronged.

Same footage, two audiences. Compound customers want to see the operator; Elite 8's audience wants to see the event come alive.

What we come away with

  • Compound cut — the operator, the brand, why we do this; posts to @compoundsportswear
  • Elite 8 cut — the event coming to life; posts to @elite8duals
  • Decide the split before the edit, not during. It changes what gets shot.
  • Shorter vertical pulls from both for the feed while the long cuts are still in post
Timing
Edit decision made before the event; cuts delivered 2–4 weeks after
Owner
Editor — see D-01, this is currently the weakest link
Watch out
Two cuts from one shoot is how both end up mediocre. Pick the primary lane up front.

Priority block D

Stop Renting The Crew

The structural fix behind every item above
2 items

Cliff: we're still leaning on third-party guys right now. Third-party shooters deliver wrestling because that is what they are hired to deliver. Nobody else will ever prioritize warm-ups, parents in the stands, or the build.

D-01

Named roles, assigned before the event

P1Both lanesNEW
Cliff saidWe definitely need to do a better job on the content. It was pretty good, but we're still leaning on third-party guys right now.

Every miss in this document traces back to nobody owning it. A role with a name attached is the fix.

What we come away with

  • Apparel shooter — owns A-01, A-02, A-04. Never assigned to a mat.
  • Story shooter — owns C-01 start to finish. Arrives before everyone.
  • Interviewer — owns B-01, B-02, A-05. Knows the sport.
  • Editor — owns turnaround, named before the event, not found after it
  • Third-party shooters stay on what they're good at: mat action and stills
  • One page per role, handed out a week ahead, so nobody is improvising on Friday
Timing
Roles named by July. Briefs out the week before.
Owner
Cliff assigns
Watch out
Budget. If we can only fund one in-house role, it is the story shooter (C-01) — that is the piece nobody else can make for us.

D-02

A shot list somebody physically ticks off

P2Both lanesNEW
Cliff saidCliff's ask for a running list is itself the fix — this is that list, made operational.

The 2026 Shoot Bible had the boards. What it did not have was a checkable list somebody carried and marked off in real time.

What we come away with

  • Print this document's item IDs as a checklist, one page
  • Every team gets a row — warm-up shot, handout, unboxing — so the holes are visible at a glance mid-event
  • End-of-day check Friday and Saturday night: what's still empty, who's fixing it tomorrow
  • Sunday morning is the last chance for anything involving a coach or a parent
Timing
Printed Thursday, carried all weekend
Owner
Whoever is not shooting — this is an ops job, not a camera job
Watch out
None. This is free.

Open Questions

Answers unblock the items above
8 open
  1. "Jerry and Beets with the Mambas" — is Jerry a separate Black Mambas coach, or was that Jarion Beets heard as two names? Nothing in B-02 can be booked until this is settled.
  2. Who follows Cliff for C-01, and does that person exist yet or do we need to hire them?
  3. How early does the story shooter start — week of, or further out? Cliff said "maybe the week of or a couple of days out", which is a floor, not a decision.
  4. All 12 teams for the unboxings, or the handful whose gear we like best? Twelve is the ambition; what is the real number we will fund?
  5. What is the content budget for 2027, and does it cover in-house roles or only third-party shooters?
  6. Do team gear handouts happen at the hotel, at home before travel, or at the venue? Different answers mean very different logistics for A-03.
  7. Which account do the Compound-lane pieces post to, and does Elite 8 cross-post or stay separate?
  8. Is there a 2027 date and venue locked yet, or is Atlanta/GICC assumed?

Sept 17, 2026Document created from Cliff's post-2026 debrief. Blocks A–D, 12 items, 8 open questions.
Sept 17, 2026Cliff's ask: mark the 2026 misses so they stand out. The six he named outright (A-01, A-02, A-03, A-04, B-01, C-01) now carry a MISSED IN 2026 flag, a red rail and a top-of-page roll-up; the gap column links straight to them.

How to add to this. Tell Cliff's Claude session what you want captured and it gets appended here — item, reasoning, shot list, timing, owner, and the thing that will go wrong. Nothing in here is deleted; items get marked done or cut instead.

Source of truth is _ELITE8/content-plan-2027/plan.json; the page is rendered by build.py and redeployed to the shoot-bible site. Sister docs: the Shoot Bible (boards and shot detail) and the Run of Show (the weekend clock).
