ikonboats.com · Re-architecture · September 2026
The boats are engineered.
The website isn't.
iKon sells an $80,000–$121,000 bass boat drawn by yacht engineers, campaigned by a two-time Angler of the Year, and photographed better than anything else in the category. The site currently asks a buyer to click through seven different doors to find eleven boats, hides the configurator entirely, and sends the flagship straight to a spreadsheet.
This document fixes the structure first. Every finding below was measured on the live site, not assumed.
01 · The verdict
Three structural failures, not a hundred small ones.
Almost everything wrong with this site traces back to three decisions. Fix them and the rest mostly resolves itself.
The lineup has seven front doors and no map
Find Your Boat, Our Portfolio, Choose Your Boat, Legend Bass Series, Victory Bass Series, New for 2027 and Color Options all lead to overlapping views of the same eleven boats. None of them presents the trim ladder that actually exists.
The highest-intent tool on the site is unreachable from the navigation
Nine working configurators exist. Not one appears in the primary nav, on a series page, or on a model page. They are reachable only from hero-slider captions. Eight of the ten competitors benchmarked put Build in the header permanently.
Five of the eleven current models have no page at all
/lxe20, /lxe21, /vls20, /vle20 and /vle21
each 301-redirect straight into a configurator. The $121,210 Legend Elite, the flagship, has no page that says what it is. Meanwhile the superseded /lx20 and
/lx21 pages are still live and still indexed.
<h1> elements on the homepageMeasured 2026-09-0302 · Evidence
What the live site is actually doing.
Measured against ikonboats.com on 3 September 2026.
Every number here is reproducible.
The homepage opens with a nine-slide carousel whose calls to action are “Click Here”
“Click Here” appears four times, plus “Click Link Below” and “Our Portfolio”. Nine hero JPEGs load up front at 354–782 KB each: roughly 4 MB of art most visitors never advance past slide one to see. The slides are only 1365 px wide, so they are simultaneously too heavy and too soft on any modern display.
Pricing is published as raw order-sheet text
The Legend page reads, verbatim: “Click Here to See As Shown: $108,965 / Base Standard 20′: $99,065 / Base Standard 21′: $103,300 / Bow Graph Option: (x1) 12″ Echomap Ultra 2 at Bow…” That is a dealer worksheet pasted onto a consumer page for a $121,000 product.
Publishing price is the right call and a genuine differentiator. Bass Cat, Caymas, Phoenix, Yellowfin and Vexus largely don't. It just has to be designed.
Randy Moss does not appear on the Pro Team page
The roster lists Wheeler, Welcher, Shryock, Shaw, Avena, Thomas, Butler, Pippin, Jones, Davis, Harris and Dannenmueller. Moss appears in exactly one place on the entire site: a homepage carousel slide that links off-site to a third-party YouTube channel.
The page also renders four anglers twice. Avena, Pippin, Davis and Dannenmueller each appear as duplicate entries.
The configurator is branded as someone else's product
The builders embed hcbyachts.kbmax.com. The browser tab reads
“VLX21.27 — HCB Yachts — KBMax”. It also displays two prices side by side, MSRP and a second
lower figure, which reads as internal pricing exposed to a retail buyer.
The engine is fine. The skin, the domain and the price disclosure are not.
Dealer-facing sales enablement is published to consumers
A page titled “Selling Features” sits in the public navigation. So does
“Why Us”, which links to Why-Us-Buyers-Guide.pdf. Both belong behind the
dealer portal, not in a buyer's menu.
Two different pages are both called “DNA”
/about/ is headed iKon DNA. /our-process/ is headed
Our DNA. They contain different content and link to each other. The nav labels them
“iKon University” and “iKon Construction”.
“Brand Story” in the navigation is a PDF download
The menu item points at IKon-Brand-Guide.pdf from 2023. A brand's story is
the one thing that should never be a file attachment.
Owner content is duplicated across two competing menus
“How To Videos” and “Service and Maintenance” each appear under both iKon University and Owners. A returning owner has two plausible paths and no reason to prefer either.
The Pro Team lives at a tournament-series URL
/tailgate-tour-ikon-boats-pro-staff/. The brand's single strongest credibility
asset is filed under a grassroots event archive.
A top-level nav slot is spent on “Brochures”, another on a mailto:
Brochures is a file type, not a user need. And the navigation contains a raw
mailto:sales@ikonboats.com link. No other brand in the benchmark set does this.
It leaks an inbox into a purchase journey with no routing, no tracking and no reply SLA.
The Tournaments menu is nine result-archive links
Four 2026 events, five 2025 events, and the Tailgate Tour home. A brand pillar has been crowded out by its own back catalog.
The color range, a real differentiator, is presented as unlabeled PNGs
Twenty flake and gel finishes plus nine upholstery colors, each a file named
Color-Bolt-for-Website-Black-Magic-Flake.png, with no readable name, no way to
see them on a hull, and no link to the builder. Legend Elite offers 20 hull colors and 9 seat
colors against Victory Sport's 3 and 1. That spread is a selling argument and it is invisible.
The dealer locator is unbranded plugin furniture
It renders “Loading…”, “Number Of Shops: 0”, “Find Nearby Service Providers” and “View Description”. For a dealer-mediated purchase, this page is the conversion point.
Technical foundation
Zero <h1> on the homepage. One JSON-LD block and no Product, Vehicle or
Organization schema on a six-figure product. 43 script tags, 12 stylesheets, 170 KB of HTML.
Cold TTFB 10.3 s, warm 2.05 s, with no full-page cache. The model/price comparison chart is a
flat PNG: unreadable on a phone, invisible to search, and un-editable without a designer.
The one thing that is already excellent
The photography. There is a full black-and-white factory series (hands laying glass, harnesses
being run, upholstery being cut, a helm being assembled) sitting in an unlabeled gallery at the
bottom of /our-process/. Plus cockpit and deck detail
shots, drone work, and a genuinely beautiful on-water set.
That material is the engineering argument. The new architecture gives it a page instead of a lightbox.
03 · The core problem
Seven doors, one room.
Each of these is a separate destination in the current navigation. All of them show some subset of the same eleven boats, in a different order, with different information.
#findyourboat/our-portfolio/#findyourboat/legend/victory/new-for-2027//our-work/“Our Portfolio” is the worst offender
It is the page that carries every price on the site, and it is named after an internal concept. No buyer searches for a portfolio. They search for a price, a model, or a dealer. In the new architecture this content becomes Compare the Lineup, sits inside the single BOATS door, and is rendered as live text instead of a PNG.
05 · Sitemap
Every page, every URL.
Sixty-one pages. Everything that exists today is either kept, merged or retired. Nothing is silently dropped. New pages are marked; §09 carries the redirect map.

07 · The lineup
The ladder already exists. Nothing on the site shows it.
Model names stay exactly as they are. But there is a clean two-axis system hiding inside them: a trim step (S → X → E) and a length step (20′ → 21′). Once it is drawn, eleven codes stop being alphabet soup.
| Series | Model | Trim | Lengths | Base MSRP | As shown | Hull colors | Seat colors | Model page today |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Victory | VLS20 | Sport | 20′ | $79,990 | $79,990 | 3 | 1 | None — redirects to builder |
| Victory | VLX20 / VLX21 | Mid | 20′ · 21′ | $77,370 / $80,230 | $85,675 / $88,535 | 8 | 2 | Both exist |
| Victory | VLE20 / VLE21 | Elite | 20′ · 21′ | $83,340 / $86,700 | $93,240 / $96,600 | 20 | 2 | Neither — both redirect |
| Legend | LXL20 / LXL21 | Legacy | 20′ · 21′ | $99,065 / $103,300 | $108,965 / $113,200 | 8 | 4 | Both exist |
| Legend | LXE20 / LXE21 | Elite | 20′ · 21′ | $106,115 / $111,310 | $116,015 / $121,210 | 20 | 9 | None — the flagship has no page |
| Multi-Species | MSX-23 | Concept | 23′ | — | — | — | — | Feedback stage |
The eight things that change up the ladder
The factory already publishes these per trim: engine options, hull color count, seat color count, graph configuration, trolling-motor choice, deluxe trailer, Fish IV, chiller system. That is a ready-made comparison spine, currently buried in a PNG.
One price anomaly worth checking
VLX20 base ($77,370) is lower than VLS20 ($79,990), so the entry-level Sport is priced above the mid trim. That may be deliberate, since the VLS package includes LiveScope, but on a comparison table it will read as an error unless it is explained.
Why keeping the names is right
The codes are on brochures, dealer systems, hull plates and three years of YouTube. Renaming costs more than it earns. Drawing the ladder costs a table.
08 · Build flow
Seven steps, and the summary is free.
Benchmarked against Porsche, Rivian, Land Rover, Airstream, Ranger, MasterCraft and Malibu. Two findings drove this spec: Ranger shows every price but on a flat 2D canvas; Malibu builds real desire in 3D and then hides the money. Nobody does both. That position is open.
Model & length
Entered from the model page or the build hub with the model already chosen. Trim and length switch inline, so you never restart to compare a 20′ against a 21′.
Start from a package, not an empty boat
Two or three curated starting points per model rather than a blank slate.
Malibu opens with “Essentials / Commonly Equipped” before a single option. Ranger's equivalent step is 124 raw priced checkboxes in flat accordions: the exact moment a configurator becomes a spreadsheet.
Power
Engine packages with the price delta and the performance consequence stated together.
Color & upholstery
Named finishes, rendered on the hull, with constraints written in plain English rather than grayed-out swatches.
Ranger exposes 20 independently colorable parts and writes its rules as sentences: “The boat's Hull Main and Outside Deck must be the same color.” That is the standard to beat, and iKon's 20 flake and gel finishes plus 9 upholstery colors can meet it.
Electronics & systems
Graphs, trolling motor, Fish IV, chiller, each with a thumbnail and one line of benefit copy, never a bare SKU. À la carte lives behind a “customize” affordance, not in front of it.
Trailer & delivery
Base versus deluxe, stated as what you actually get: wheel size, runway lights, step ladder, handrail, fenders.
Your build — free, shareable, no form
Full configuration in the URL. Print or save it, text it to anyone, come back to it in a month. No email wall.
MasterCraft gates on choosing a dealer; Malibu won't even let you print your own build without contact details. Ranger lets you save freely and still captures the lead through Send-to-Dealer. And Ranger is the one actually selling bass boats.
Price behavior
Running total pinned: sticky top bar on desktop, fixed bottom bar on mobile. Every option carries its delta inline. Included items read “Included”, never “$0”. Freight and prep appear once a dealer is chosen, and say so before then.
The visual
iKon already owns transparent 3936 px model renders and shoots top-down deck photography. A pre-rendered multi-angle turntable that recolors, Rivian's approach of 72 frames on a canvas, is achievable without a real-time 3D pipeline.
Where it ends
Send to a named dealer, with a stated timeline. Not a generic form, not a
mailto:. Porsche's dealer handoff spells out what
happens today and what happens next — that sentence is worth copying.
One thing to fix before anything else ships
The current builder is served from hcbyachts.kbmax.com,
titled “HCB Yachts — KBMax”, and shows two prices side by side. Whatever else happens, that page
should be on iKon's domain, in iKon's skin, showing one number.
09 · Migration
Nothing gets dropped.
Every existing URL either survives or 301s somewhere sensible. The legacy LX20/LX21 pages and the five builder redirects are the ones that matter for search.
| Today | New | Why | |
|---|---|---|---|
| /our-portfolio/ | → | /boats/compare/ | Carries every price on the site; needs a name a buyer would use |
| /legend/ | → | /boats/legend/ | Nested under the single lineup door |
| /victory/ | → | /boats/victory/ | Same |
| /lx21/ · /lx20/ | → | /boats/legend/lxl21/ · lxl20/ | Superseded naming, still live and indexed |
| /lxe21/ → builder | → | /boats/legend/lxe21/ | The flagship gets a page instead of a redirect |
| /lxe20/ /vls20/ /vle20/ /vle21/ | → | /boats/{series}/{model}/ | Four more models that currently skip straight to a configurator |
| /{model}-boat-builder/ ×9 | → | /build/{model}/ | One consistent path, one hub |
| /email-{model}-boat/ ×8 | → | /build/{model}/summary/ | Absorbed into the shareable summary |
| /about/ | → | /brand/story/ | “iKon University” retires; content splits three ways |
| /our-systems/ · /our-process/ | → | /brand/engineering/ | Two pages both headed “DNA” become one |
| /selling-features/ | → | dealer portal | Dealer enablement, not consumer content |
| /our-work/ | → | /boats/colors/ | “Our Work” describes nothing; it is the color range |
| /tailgate-tour-ikon-boats-pro-staff/ | → | /brand/pro-team/ | Off the event URL |
| /tailgate-tour-…-results/ ×9 | → | /brand/tailgate-tour/results/{year}/{event}/ | Nine nav links become one archive |
| /owners/ | → | /ownership/ | Merges with the duplicated University items |
| /find-dealers/ | → | /dealers/ | Rebuilt, plus indexable per-dealer pages |
| /blog/ | → | /brand/news/ | Category archives follow |
| /brochures/ | → | /brand/brochures/ | Out of the header, onto the pages that need it |
| /api-testing/ /test-boat/ /coming-soon/ /vlx20-old/ | → | 410 / removed | Publicly reachable sandbox pages |
Sequencing
Phase 1. The five missing model pages, the Build hub, Compare, and the builder re-skin.
That is the conversion leak, and it can ship before any redesign.
Phase 2. Nav restructure and redirects, in one release so search sees a single move.
Phase 3. Engineering, Factory, Pro Team, Dealer rebuild.
Technical baseline to hit
An <h1> on every page. WebP/AVIF with
real srcset: the current 7.6 MB homepage set
converts to about 1.4 MB with no visible loss. Product and Organization schema. Full-page cache
or a static front end; 10.3 s cold TTFB is the single worst number in this document.
Stack recommendation
Keep WordPress as the editor for News and long-form. Serve the front end statically. Keep KBMax
as the configurator engine, because the option and price rules live there and are worth real
money, but put it on ikonboats.com/build/ in an iKon skin.
10 · The open decision
Now the visual direction is a real question.
Both of these carry the structure above without changing a single block. Both are dark, engineered, and built on iKon's own palette: the ink #10161F, red #EE374D and HCB gold #D2B350 sampled straight out of the logo pack. Neither is the category default.
Chart Datum Direction A
The layout grid is built from marine depth contours, so every column and every rule is a line that means something. Specs are set as sounding figures against a graduated ladder rather than floating in cards. One route line threads the whole site and terminates on the primary action.
- Owns
- Water, navigation, the dealer map, tournament venues
- Risk
- Turns decorative the moment the contours stop carrying real data
- Best on
- Home, Compare, Dealers, Tailgate Tour
The Lines Plan Direction B
The hull is presented as a drawing before it is presented as a photograph, with stations, waterlines and buttocks as the layout system, with the photograph resolving out of the geometry as you scroll. The engineering claim gets made before a single adjective is used.
- Owns
- The yacht lineage, without ever saying it out loud
- Risk
- Blueprint aesthetics are well-worn; only earns it with real iKon geometry
- Best on
- Model pages, Engineering, Factory, the Build flow
They are not mutually exclusive
A defensible third answer: Lines Plan as the house system, the one that carries the HCB engineering inheritance and the stronger of the two on pages where money is decided, with Chart Datum's contour language reserved for water pages: the dealer map, the Tailgate Tour, the venue archive. One world, one clearly-bounded second register.
The images above are concept renders, generated to compare directions. Any garbled lettering in them is an artifact of that process, not a proposal.
What is fixed either way
The marks come from your logo pack and are used flat, with no chrome gradients and no outer glows. The iKON made by HCB Yachts lockup exists and is genuinely good; it belongs on Engineering, Factory and the footer, used quietly rather than announced. Model wordmarks follow the existing LX21 device (thin, wide, bolt through the letterform), the most sophisticated thing in the current kit and is currently used on one banner.
11 · To go further
What I need, and what I'd flag.
Needed from iKon
- Current dealer list with addresses — the locator shows zero
- Confirmation of the VLX20 vs VLS20 price order
- Whether Randy Moss can be featured on-site, and whether Chasing10 can be embedded
- Named color list for the 20 flake/gel finishes and 9 upholstery colors
- Freight and prep policy — what can be shown before a dealer is chosen
- Access to the KBMax option and rules data
Deliberately not invented
- No owner testimonials or review counts — none exist to cite
- No performance claims — no published top speed, hole shot or fuel burn
- No dealer count, production numbers or lead times
- No financing partner
Flagged in passing
- Four anglers render twice on the Pro Team page
- Sandbox pages are publicly reachable, including an Epicor API page
- The builder exposes a second price alongside MSRP
- “Brand Story” in the nav is a 2023 PDF
- HCB's own service page ships a heading typo — worth a shared copy pass
