Tracking setup and what we need from you

freebirdpromo.com · October 16, 2026 · updated October 19

We've finished the GA4 and link-tracking setup on our side. This page lists what's in place, how we count leads, one data-quality issue you should know before reading any numbers, and six things we'd like you to set up on the ads side.

A lead is a lead form, nothing else

We only count a lead when someone submits one of our two lead forms: the contact form (/contact.html) or a quote request from the cart. Both fire one event, generate_lead, and only after the submission goes through.

Most recent "traffic" is bots

About 95% of GA4 sessions from Sep 18 to Oct 15 came from corporate email-security scanners that open every link in our emails, not from people. They show up as data-center cities (Boardman OR, Council Bluffs IA, Moses Lake WA, Des Moines IA, Ashburn VA, San Jose CA), 800×600 or 1920×1080 desktop screens, almost no mobile, and a few seconds of engagement.

What the site sends

The site pushes standard GA4 e-commerce events to the dataLayer. GTM forwards them to GA4. Use these as your triggers for Google Ads and Meta conversions.

What we need from Genius

  1. Google Ads conversions. Count leads from generate_lead only and sales from purchase (primary, with value), either by importing the GA4 key events or with a Google Ads conversion tag in GTM on the same events. Turn off or remove any automatic form-submission, page-view or click-based "lead" conversions. Please confirm which setup you use so nothing is double counted.
  2. Meta Pixel events. The pixel currently loads on all pages. Please map our dataLayer events to Meta standard events: view_item → ViewContent, add_to_cart → AddToCart, begin_checkout → InitiateCheckout, purchase → Purchase (value, currency, order ID as event ID), generate_lead → Lead. No other event should map to Lead. Conversions API on top would be ideal.
  3. Tag every Meta ad URL. Paste this into each ad's URL parameters field so GA4 can credit sales to the right campaign:
    utm_source={{site_source_name}}&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_content={{ad.name}}
  4. Google Ads auto-tagging on. Leave gclid auto-tagging enabled. No manual UTMs needed on Google ads.
  5. Remarketing. Use the GA4 audiences above. Exclude Purchasers from prospecting. Expect the audience sizes to shrink as the bot filter takes effect; that's the filter working.
  6. Bot filter on new tags. When you add a tag in GTM, add Block - Likely bot as an exception trigger.

Our organic posts use short links on our own domain (freebirdpromo.com/go/…) that carry UTM tags. Emails are tagged by Mailchimp (utm_medium email). So in GA4 you'll see Email, Organic Social, Paid Social, Paid Search and Creator / UGC as separate channels.
